The L-Word and the...L-Place?

In 5 days 2011 will be referred to as "last year" and everyone will set out to begin their new year with a clean start. As I look back at my personal timeline of major events in 2011, it's one for the books. The biggest highlight was GETTING MARRIED to my precious Brian on June 11, 2011 and I'll have you know that our marriage date was exactly two years to-the-day from the day we met on June 11, 2009.

That is one of many astounding circumstances of our relationship and after recalling all of the other circumstances of how we found each other, the similarities and connections we had, and how the journey worked out from then on, I am positive that the several occurrences of Divine intervention could transform some of those agnostics into believers. I mean it was almost comical how blatantly clear God made it that Brian and I were meant to be together.

This post, however, is not about that part. We just celebrated our first married Christmas together 2 days ago!

It was wonderful: I woke up at dawn, tidied up the living room (that had been temporarily disguised as a gift-wrapping room hit by a tornado), lit the candles on the mantel and coffee table, turned on the Christmas tree, made a pot of coffee, stuffed Brian's stocking with Reese's and a filled-out book "What I Love About You" by David Marshall and blasted some music from the Pandora Christmas Station music to wake him up. When he came downstairs, I then had to go hide while he set up my big gift that was hidden in the basement. I had to assure him time and again that I would NOT go down there because I assume he pictures me being a sneaky little elf tip-toeing down to the basement giggling and looking for my presents. While I tease and guess what a gift might be, I don't actually want to know. Honestly. Besides, I like to avoid entering any basement as much as possible.

ANYWAYS, we exchanged gifts and had our precious Hallmark picturesque moments as a lovely happy couple opening our gifts by the tree: laughing, crying, slow motion kisses, dramatic embraces, "Love is a Many Splendored Thing" (the song at the very beginning of the movie "Grease" with Danny and Sandy falling in love on the beach) playing in the background, etc.

Our little border collie pup, Zoë, got a stocking of surprises as well! I got Brian a stock of things to unwrap and he got me a one main gift, and a few little wrapped ones. I stocked Brian with plenty of apparel; I know that with guys, clothes aren't exactly the most exciting thing to unwrap, but I can tell it's appreciated later when I see my husband wearing it days in a row. Of the things-you-wear gifts, I think his (AND my) favorite goes to these shoes: Sperry Topsider Authentic Original Chukka. I also got him the new Assasin's Creed video game, a toolbox and assortment of tools (thanks to his parents' help as well), the inspirational book: "Start Something That Matters" by Blake Mycoskie , the founder of TOMS, etc.

So what was my present? First of all, he got me my ticket to the 21st century that I'd been reluctant to get just to be a rebel and make a point (that I'm an idiot): my very first smart phone! Not only a smart phone, but an iPhone! Yes, I will admit that I have fallen in love with it. And the big present hiding in the basement was this gorgeous complete set of golf clubs:

Maxfli Women's Revolution Set. My very own set! He even had a glove popping out of one of the pockets to complete the glorious showcase of the bag and clubs with their matching club covers. Now we can go play together without me having to use his clubs. The only clubs I've ever used are men's clubs... for tall men, no less. I will admit that one of my guesses WAS golf clubs when I was bugging Brian after he said he had my gift set up in the basement, and he didn't even flinch. Very impressive, sir. Well done, indeed.

BUT, something I never ever EVER saw coming was another surprise he added in. He told me some time before Christmas that he had been planning something for our one year anniversary in June. What we were doing would be revealed on Christmas day. Well, there we were and I'm glad we were sitting down. He began by saying he'd talked to his close relatives, Chris and Juliet, and his brother, Richard, to work on arrangements. Chris and Juliet live in England. Richard is a pilot for Continental Express. So putting those puzzles together in my head: "England....traveling....wait a second, what was he about to say??"

For our anniversary we are going to...LONDON, ENGLAND!!! "London" is a buzz word that immediately triggers the British anthem, "God Save the Queen," to play in my head, so that might be what stunted my reaction reflexes.  My reaction wasn't the expected teenage freak-out of jumping up and down screaming and running around like I was being chased by bees. I think I repeated "are you serious?!" about 57 times with the jaw-dropped stare, but it still hasn't registered and I told him I'd let him know when it finally does, because when this news actually does click, I'll follow with the aforementioned teenage freak-out.

Now you know what the title of this post is referring to: London! The L-Place! I have dreamt of going to England in general since I heard my first British accent. It had to be when I was five or six watching my favorite movie of all time, "The Sound of Music." Yes I know that "The Sound of Music" is set in Austria, but JULIE ANDREWS, or should I say Dame Julia Elizabeth Andrews, is English and might be frightened if she knew how obsessed I am with her...I won't get into that.

Brian and I are going to London. I still can't believe it, but time isn't going to wait for me to wrap my head around it, so LET'S GET PLANNING

Our visit will be for a week at the beginning of June. Our trip can be placed in the "budget-friendly travel" category due to the fact that we are staying with Chris and Juliet and are most-likely obtaining buddy passes for the flights. Two major categories, plane tickets and lodging fees, covered.

What is going to take a miracle to cover is the list of attractions to see! I have to be realistic and accept that I can't see all of the must-see places because that list goes on forever. The Tower of London, Big Ben, Westminster Abby, Wembley Stadium, Buckingham Palace, The London Eye, Trafalgar Square, Globe Theatre, etc. etc. etc. Brian has been to England before when he was younger, but this will be re-visiting London at a more mature age when you really appreciate seeing the sites and taking it all in.

Not only are we visiting a city famous for it's history and landmarks, but London is one of THE top fashion capitals in the world! Stella McCartney, Burberry, Alexander McQueen, Vivienne Westwood, Matthew Williamson, John Galliano, etc. are all well-known top notch British designers!

I am a frequent enjoyer of Polyvore as you will see in future posts, and have previously created English-inspired sets:

Seeing as we have months to plan, expect to see more London-inspired posts ahead. For now, I think that'll do for this post. I managed to begin with a brief peek into the world of Brian and me, to our Christmas, to an exciting mark already on our calendar for 2012. I'm sure the beginning of June isn't the only exciting occurrence 2012 has in store for us! Until next time!

Polyvore Pep Rally

Polyvore is listed in Time Magazine's top 50 best websites for 2011. For those of you who are unfamiliar with Polyvore, it is an interactive fashion website in which you are able to design fashion sets to express your style and the latest trends. It is my favorite creative outlet on the web, and was my first love before I discovered Pinterest. It's way more than simply putting together outfits you like. The sky's the limit in terms of things you add to your set to create a work of art!

There are so many contests to enter that require you to create sets based on specific themes and I am DETERMINED to win one! The community is awesome and full of the most creative people with so many different tastes and styles. I'd like to share a few of the sets I have made. I picked my favorite recent sets, but I have made a TON of them so if you want to see more or are already a Polyvore member, add me as a contact. My username is "christenjune."

See how fun these are?! I love designing the different backgrounds and coming up with fitting titles for each set. I absolutely LOVE fall and winter clothes: sweaters, scarves, pretty jackets and coats, the art of layering, etc. If you're into fashion, I highly recommend this site to have fun experimenting with all sorts of looks.

That wraps it up for this Polyvore Pep Rally! Until next time, keep creating!

Somewhere Between Finger Painting and Picasso

"The artist is a receptacle for emotions that come from all over the place: from the sky, from the earth, from a scrap of paper, from a passing shape, from a spider's web."
Pablo Picasso

I wanted to share a few of my canvas paintings. Painting is a favorite hobby of mine and I really want to get some professional instruction, but I think I've done alright on my own so far, at least good enough to display my canvases around our home.

Here are a few of my paintings in order from the most recent to oldest. I have other ones in boxes that I wanted to post, but I don't even want to mess with our storage room. This is my first time posting my paintings on the internet, so this is an exciting moment...for me at least!
..........
LA BAÑERA

Spanish for "bathtub." I completed it THIS morning. I needed a piece of artwork for our upstairs guest bathroom. The idea to paint an old claw-foot tub is not original seeing that I got it from those pieces of wall art that you always come across in stores like Home Goods or Hobby Lobby. Instead of the typical french bathroom vocabulary words that most of those prints have, I switched it to Spanish! ¡Claro que sí! There isn't really a meaning behind the weird flooring color combo. The idea popped into my head and I painted it. Yep, that's about it.

.............................

"A STREETLIGHT NAMED DESIRE"
Ah yes, a European street lamp in front of a brick home with a painted blue door overgrown with ivy vines. Well, that was the vision at least. The door turned out to look more like the night sky instead, which still makes a neat painting.

.................................
"Warm Colors bring Cool Weather"
I have a slight obsession with trees, leaves, and branches. Of course changing leaves are the most beautiful in a painting!

...............
"Hobbit House"
The idea was to paint an English cottage with a lush garden, but it turned out a little different and Brian and I both agreed it looked like a Hobbit home, so that is how this painting adopted its title. I painted this during my senior year of college.

.......................
"Chardonnay in Merlot"
This is another painting from the good ol' college days. I'm still very proud of it. And for once, I had a painting turn out the way I had pictured it to look. I am pretty sure that this was my first attempt at creating a still life painting after several still life drawings.

..................

There you go! I'm glad I could share my little hobby with you. I'm up for criticism and comments too. Thanks for viewing! Ciao for now.

Townhouse in the Trees

Bienvenue à la maison du Sellier

I live with my husband, Brian, and our beautiful border collie, Zoe, in a townhouse surrounded by beautiful trees. During this time of the year, it is especially beautiful with the colorful changing leaves.

You'd never guess this wooded area was located behind a shopping plaza with Bed Bath & Beyond, Target, Pier 1, and World Market, making my home shopping trips much more convenient!

The townhouse was built in the 1970s. That's right. Among interior decorator professionals and home designers, the 70s is popularly known as the decade that style forgot. Thankfully, the place didn't come with brown shag carpet and hues of pea green and mustard yellow. However, it does have carpet and lots of it, a galley kitchen, and a few creepy chandeliers. The carpet and chandeliers would be the first to go, but we are only renting it and therefore cannot make drastic changes. This is where thrifty home decorating comes in to create a personalized space that feels like OUR home instead of Ron Burgundy's shag pad. Thankfully, Brian and I are old souls and aren't quick to label a vintage retro vibe as "outdated," but rather a homey lived-in place with plenty of character. In fact, I am all for the refurbished vintage style. Due to the fact that we are talking about a three-story townhouse, this post will only tour the main floor: the one we spend most of our time on.

This is our entryway:

As you can kind of see, I have a love for wrought-iron accents: wrought-iron print rug from Lowes, the key and bicycle wall decor from Hobby Lobby, and the coat/umbrella stand from Bed Bath & Beyond.

The entryway opens up to the dining area:
In case I gave off the impression earlier that I despise the popular 70s shade that is pea green, I in fact feel quite the opposite. As you can see below, it is the color of my table linens.
I like to display pretty pottery, pitchers and casserole dishes instead of stuffing them away in a cupboard. Of course, the photo doesn't capture the colors or details.Below is a close-up of the current table centerpiece that will probably be replaced soon with a Christmas theme, but Brian and I spent an hour or two one night melting these candles onto the wine bottles. It took longer than usual because I later realized that these taper candles are the special non-drip kind. On ANY OTHER occasion less "drippage" is what you want, but seeing that the POINT of this DIY project is for the candle wax to DRIP down the bottle to fuse the two together, it took extra effort and lighter fluid. I will also note that the painting of the autumn trees in the background was done by yours truly.

Moving on to the galley kitchen:
It's long and narrow with lots of cabinets and counter space to hold all of the appliances. Note: I LOVE our Cuisinart Brick Toaster Classic oven. I registered for it online and was sold when I read it was a brick oven, toaster and broiler that comes with many inserts and gadgets including a pizza stone. I had no idea that it was almost the size of an actual oven until I saw a delivery box the size of the front door. Another shout out should be made to the All-Clad cooking utensils set and their lifetime guarantee!

I recommend the Cuisinart Model Em-100 Espresso Machine along with the Crock-Pot six quart cooker. We keep our cookbooks on hand in the kitchen since they are frequently put to use and my favorite is the Williams Sonoma "Essentials of Baking" (on display) while Brian's favorite is Jamie Oliver's "Food Revolution" (the one behind it).

Onto our living room area:

We had more space to work with than we're used to, so we have a sitting/tv area and a music area behind it. We are renting this place from family friends and they asked if we wanted to keep the grand piano (I don't think they meant forever) since it would be a hassle and a half to move it out. I lived abroad in Argentina for half a year and that would explain my little art collection of tango dancers on the wall. The biggest and best painting, the one on the far left, was actually from Brian!
Below is the matching love seat. I'm looking for more colorful throw pillows since these blend in with the sofa to make a "blah" presentation. We are currently lacking side tables, so I put an old coffee table to use, stacked some books under the lamp to add height and covered the rest of the table with this hand-woven basket tray filled with Brian's record collection. And most importantly, the Texas star on the wall represents not only the home state of my beloved Texan husband, but where we met and fell in love!

This area has two sliding doors that lead out onto our scenic patio:

The patio dining area is also being used as my amateur painting area. I'm not a professional yet, but my paintings are good enough for wall decor!
We don't have luxurious outdoor lounge furniture yet, but we do have two fold out chairs and a hand-me-down wicker chair! Throw on a few chair cushions, a rug, add a tile-top table and candles for ambience and [voila!] you have a seating area!

Here is a view of the small downstairs bathroom:
The framed vintage chair prints are from Pottery Barn. I just got them on super sale.
My solution to not being able to paint the walls was this little DIY project: I made my own wallpaper by taping/gluing together old yellowed pages of piano sheet music from 1920s sing-along books. Some may call it tacky, others might call it art. I call it art and an interesting conversation piece. No need to worry about trashy song titles when you're dealing with classic sing-alongs and love songs.

I have shown you outside, in and around the main floor of our humble [rental] abode and hope you enjoyed the tour. More updates and beautifications to come!
